Madness In The Fast Lane

In 2008, BBC cameras filmed two Swedish sisters throwing themselves into traffic on the M6. When it was shown on BBC One, nearly 7 million viewers were glued to their screens, and millions more watched it later on YouTube.

The footage was shocking. One previewer wrote “On no account miss this documentary. It opens with what is perhaps the most extraordinary footage I’ve seen on TV”.

But this amazing footage was only part of an even more incredible story, one which could not be told at the time for legal reasons.

Now, two years later, this documentary reveals the full story of the hours just before the cameras captured that motorway footage, and the even more chilling story of what happened over next 72 hours, which left one of the sisters fleeing the scene of a crime, after she had stabbed a man through the chest.

This excellent documentary was on BBC 1 last night – voiced by Yours Truly. It’s an amazing story.

You can watch it on iPlayer here.

Riviera Comedy

I have just returned from a week of gigs on the French Riviera. Monaco, Cannes, Antibes and Nice with Andy White, Roger Monkhouse and, son, Stanley. What fun.

If you live in the South Of France I recommend these gigs, run by the lovely Olly and Amy, and booked by left-footed centre back ‘Thumper’ Dan Atkinson.

Couple Of Remarks

My son, Samuel, who is 9, was trying to persuade me the other day to buy him a pair of trainers. ‘They’re only nine pounds,’ he said. ‘For both’.

Then about a day later he was trying to persuade me to buy him some lego from Argos. He explained that something cost £35. I said I thought it cost £75. ‘No,’ he said. ‘It’s jaw-dropping prices.’

Joe Cole and Jamie Carragher , the footballers, were interviewed on ITV4 the other night. The interviewer was all over Cole asking him how he was settling at Liverpool, what he thought of Hodgson and so on. Carraagher was being ignored and eventually said, ‘Hey. I’m here too, you know’. Without pausing, the interviewer turned to him and she said, ‘So how do you think Joe Cole is settling in?’

Was it deliberate? There’s the big question.

How Much Further Can US Dollar Fall?

Latest for Moneyweek …

The fall in the US dollar over the past two months has been simply breathtaking.

The US Dollar Index measures the dollar against a basket of foreign currencies: the euro, the pound, the Canadian dollar, the Swiss franc, the Japanese yen and the Swedish kroner.

The index rose astonishingly quickly from 80 in April to 89 by early June, as panic over Greece overwhelmed the euro. But it has since turned tail and retraced all those gains as quickly as it made them.

In fact, the dollar had better turn up pretty soon or we’ll have a rout on our hands..

Death Crosses Everywhere …

“Watch out for the ‘death cross’” ran the title of Saturday’s Money Morning round up.

But what is a death cross? What does it indicate? And just how reliable is it?

These are pretty pertinent questions. We have death crosses forming across global markets – confirmed in Japan’s Nikkei and the Shanghai Composite; forming in the FTSE 100; in oil and in copper; and looking likely in the Dow, Nasdaq and S&P 500.

So let’s take a look at this commonly-used technical indicator in today’s Money Morning …

The Pound And The Tories

My latest for Moneyweek :

The pound seemed to like George Osborne’s emergency Budget. On Tuesday morning it was standing at $1.47. By mid-afternoon yesterday, it was above $1.49.

But the fact is, the pound has been rallying since mid-May, when news started to leak about the government’s austerity plans.

So is the bear market in the pound now over? Or is this yet another case of buy the rumour and sell the news?
