Where To Next For Gold?

My latest for Moneyweek:

A number of you have asked for my latest thoughts on gold. In particular, you’ve been asking about my spring target of $1,400 an ounce. So I’d like to take a look at it this morning.

Let’s be honest, in 2010 gold has been a bit of a dog. So have gold shares. Gold began the year at about $1,120 an ounce. Today it sits at around $1,110.

Gold shares, as measured by the index of unhedged gold miners, the HUI, are down some 10%. The HUI began 2010 at just below 450 and now sits barely above 400. The S&P 500, meanwhile, which began the year at around 1,130, now sits a few percent higher at around 1,170.

Worse still, in January’s correction, gold and gold shares were hit harder than the stock market. And in the subsequent bounce, they have been laggards. This is not the action I would like to see. I would prefer some signs of leadership.

Obama’s second year could mean hard times for stocks

My latest for Moneyweek :

History can tell us a lot about today’s stockmarkets. And a phenomenon that goes back to the 19th century tells us that Obama’s second year in office could well be very ugly for the markets. Dominic Frisby explains.

Frisby’s Greatest Ever

Frisby’s Greatest Ever is a pilot for a new TV comedy I have been working on, directed by Brendon Connelly, and written by me and Gary Delaney. We will shortly be touting it around broadcasters.

The make-up and prosthetics are in my opinion absolutely superb. They were done by Araon and Maralyn Sherman of Sherman Make-Up Effects . Behold their work in the picture gallery.

Scrooby Trevithick

Currently playing on Thursday nights at 23:00 on Radio 4 is Andy Parsons’ sitcom Scrooby Trevithick.

It follows the exploits of hapless Scrooby, an enthusiastic but flawed wannabe who zealously posts his web diaries online and features Dara O Briain, Russell Howard, Hugh Dennis, Russell Kane, Rufus Hound, Alun Cochrane, Paul Thorne, Martin Coyote , Barunka O’Shaughnessy and, of course, me. It was produced by Paul Russell for Open Mike.

If you miss it, you should be able to find it on BBC iplayer.

What the 1929 crash tells us about stocks today

Investors never learn. History shows that they make the same mistakes over and over again. Contrarians can take advantage of this. Dominic Frisby looks at four stock market crashes, and what they can teach us about today’s markets.

Should you buy into Barrick Gold’s big London listing?

My latest for Moneyweek:

I can remember back in 2004, sipping wine with a French friend, looking out at the sea off the South-West coast of France, and explaining why he should buy gold.

Whether it was the wine or my argument that persuaded him, he was convinced. He announced that the following morning he would buy options on Barrick, the world’s largest gold producer.

I never found out if he made the purchase or not. I hope he didn’t. Gold was a buy. But the world’s largest gold producer wasn’t. I’ll explain why in a moment.

But now Barrick is selling shares of its African unit in a London IPO. Is this a company goldbugs – and my French friend – should be looking to buy now? Or is it one to avoid?
